Doin Work / Training log is back!
Things couldn't moving along better right now. The end of this past week opened up and we saw some warmer temperatures down here in Central Tejas. That meant good things for my cycling. More on that later.....
I really wanted to push the volume and push my progression this winter. There are some things I've yet to answer with regards to my talent on a bike. I've always felt I could be a solid cyclist but have never really and truly laid out the volume and base to get there. Well, there's always that "Time" factor that comes into play when you talk about great cyclist. Most of the great athletes I know in the sport who can lay it down have been on the bike for years..... My resume on the bike can be summed up in a couple sentences....just not enough time/years spent "Doin Work".
This winter I made a decision to lay the volume down. Nothing stupid like jumping into 20 hour cycling weeks or anything....just progression. Take it one week at a time and move through the miles.
Back to this week and the weather turning in my favor. I've always wanted to lay down 2 big days of cycling back to back. So, on Thursday I rode 96 miles with a 2.7 mile transition run for kicks. Friday, I woke up and rode 101 miles with a 3.3 mile transition run just to make sure I kept myself in check during the ride. I would have rode longer Thursday but due to a late start...I was pushing daylight to get those 96 in.
All in all, I feel great. If it wasn't raining tomorrow...I'd be out to make it 3 in a row. Since I'm a big believer in fate, I figure there's a reason for the weather change and an easy hour on the trainer or a middle distance run tomorrow is probably the safest bet.
If the weathers good in the next couple weeks, I'll probably try to hit the 3x100 in consecutive days. Right now it's all base and steady state riding. Same with running and swimming. Although I have been known to hit the occasional speed set in the pool and my progression there is improving over any other discipline.
I wanted to talk a little about training and pitfalls young athletes fall into. Over training, Recovery, athletic progression, giving your body a chance to respond, etc. Something maybe a new athlete to the sport can learn from. I spent the end of last year way over trained and just digging my way through each week and each race. Looking back, it was a truly miserable experience. I'd like to jot down a few of my thoughts.....so look for that later on.
Anyway....it's late and I'm pretty tired. I've spent most of the evening building the Training Log page and haven't truly relaxed from today's ride...and now the blog....whew...I've had enough computer for one day.... Hot shower and a pillow sound really good right now.
